James Hetfield revealed Lars Ulrich had never trained until four or five years ago
According to the lead singer of Metallica, Ulrich practices “four days for a two-hour set” these days.
James Hetfield, the vocalist of Metallica, said that Lars Ulrich had not practiced until “maybe four or five years ago.”
Hetfield talks about their experience at the first-ever Power Trip event in the US in a recent edition of The Metallica Report, the band’s official podcast. things turned out that Ulrich had spent years winging things, even though the band arrived early for the Californian event to observe the other acts and squeeze in some additional practice time.
The speaker quotes Lars as saying, “Interesting fact: Until – I don’t know – I’d say maybe four or five years ago, he started really getting into rehearsing.” (Blabbermouth transcription). And now he’ll practice for a two-hour set for four days, which is great because that’s what he has to do.
“So, there was going to be a few days of rehearsals [for Power Trip] down at HQ [Metallica’s San Rafael, California] headquarters,” he goes on. “And I told them, ‘I’m not going to come, folks. I would really want to see all these other bands, therefore I would love it if we could locate a practice space here [nearer to the Power Trip event]. After Robert [Trujillo] joined us, we were able to find a location to practice at the Empire Polo Club’s polo fields.
And I’m appreciative that Lars agreed to do it. They rehearsed down there, and once we arrived, we had rehearsals and got to see these bands perform. Having your own property for the duration of the event is so freaking awesome. We arrive, practice, and then go outside to see Iron Maiden. Really, how awesome is that?
Hetfield continues, “So every single band that’s played here has a lot of inspiration for me.” “Aging is a joke, I realize that. I was just checking up ages. It’s inspirational that there are so many men in these bands who are [in their] late 60s and early 70s. It was also amazing that they were still kicking ass in this type of heat up there. But in our Metallica journey, each and every one of those bands has had a role in our early years and upbringing. Thus, it’s quite awesome to be involved with this.
In the beginning, we used to spend a lot of time together, hanging out at all the festivals we attended. Yes, we would perform first and then have the opportunity to see all the other bands. We would spend time together. It felt rather familiar. Though it was obviously a different day, it’s still a lot of fun that we’re all hanging out here. It is a lot of fun to see.
