Renowned Metallica frontman James Hetfield and accomplished car enthusiast Jerry Magnuson garnered early season honors at the Goodguys 28th All American Get-Together in Pleasanton. Hetfield’s “Slow Burn” secured the prestigious title of West Coast Custom of the Year, while Magnuson’s “Magnatude” ’32 Muroc roadster claimed the Street Rod d’Elegance crown at the Del Mar Nationals, marking the event’s 10th anniversary.

James Hetfield’s passion for custom cars and hot rods has been a longstanding interest, and recent collaborations with stylist Rick Dore have elevated his involvement in the custom car scene. At the All American Get-Together, Hetfield’s creation, “Slow Burn,” stole the spotlight and clinched the West Coast Custom of the Year accolade. The car, designed by Hetfield and Dore, featured paint and body artistry by Darryl Hollenbeck of Vintage Color Studio. Notable competitors in the custom field included Scott Bonowski’s ’50 Merc, Richard Zocchi’s ’68 Dodge Polara, Lionel Duran’s ’60 Buick, and Dore’s candy blue 1950 Cadillac. “Slow Burn” impressed with a blend of concourse-style elegance and traditional custom flair, showcasing unique design elements and craftsmanship.
Jerry Magnuson’s “Magnatude”:
The Del Mar Nationals, celebrating its 10th anniversary, focused on elegantly styled street rods, and Jerry Magnuson’s ’32 Muroc roadster, named “Magnatude,” stood out as the Street Rod d’Elegance winner. Hand-formed by Marcel and designed by Chip Foose, this sleek and stylish roadster exemplified elegance. The event featured a top-tier lineup of pre-’49 machines, highlighting the finest street rods seen in years.
