After much speculation, Bill Murray has finally spoken out about his past relationship with Kelis.
After being seen together at several music events that summer, the renowned actor and R&B singer were reported to be dating in 2023.
In an interview with Sway in the Morning, the Ghostbusters actress has now addressed the rumors for the first time.
“Kelis is the girl I met. I got excellent press that I was dating her, which raised my cred,” Murray joked.
“I love that video,” the Oscar nominee continued, adding that he had been drawn to the singer ever since he saw her in Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money” music video. I saw that. “That’s the silliest thing,” I continued. How could I have missed that when it first came out?
“I’m thinking, ‘Who is the girl with the red hair?’ It’s so crazy.” I simply needed to meet her someday because it was Kelis. She has shown to be amazing.
Murray continued by denying that he and Kelis had ever been romantically involved, despite his obvious affection for the singer.
Then he joked, “But, you know, one of us could be on the rebound any second.” “No, no,” he explained.
“Lol yeah maybe for now everyone’s dumb and will believe anything but the best part is we are both blessed, rich, and happy,” Kelis said in a June 2023 social media post in response to the rumors. It’s humorous, but who is laughing now?
According to the U.S. Sun, the two became close after their respective partners passed away. Murray’s estranged wife Jennifer died the year before, and Kelis’ second husband Mike Mora died in 2022.
In a subsequent interview with PEOPLE, the singer discussed the tragedy and acknowledged that, despite the heartbreaking loss, she was thankful that she and her husband’s kids could say goodbye.
It wasn’t an unexpected event. We managed to get ready, show love, and bid farewell. We were able to spend the time that we needed to, as much as we were given, the best way that we could. Is this a favorable circumstance? “No, it’s terrible, but I’m thankful,” she added.
From the start, it was beyond our control. We simply appreciate what we had. It’s a fact of life.
