Although Giannis Antetokounmpo’s journey to the NBA has not been without its challenges, his family has supported him throughout. After their son was selected by the Bucks, Giannis’ parents, Veronica and Charles Antetokounmpo, relocated to the US from Greece. Kostas, Francis, Thanasis, and Alexis are Giannis’s other four brothers.

In an interview with Marc Spears of The Undefeated, Giannis assisted in elucidating his nationality. Although his parents are from Lagos, Nigeria, “The Greek Freak” is originally from Athens, Greece.

Giannis told The Undefeated, “Obviously, a lot of people don’t know where I’m from.” Many people mistakenly believe that my parents are Greek. My parents are both Black. My parents are both from Nigeria.

Kostas and Alex, Giannis’ brothers, are also excellent basketball players. Alex plays for Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, and will be a member of the 2020 class. Giannis is proud of his African and Greek heritage.

Giannis told The Undefeated, “It doesn’t matter what people may believe because of my nickname.” “I heard the comment, ‘You’re not Greek,’ a lot when I was in Greece. Because you’re black, you’re Nigerian. However, there have also been numerous instances where the converse has occurred, with individuals saying, “You’re not African.” You’re Greek. “The Greek Freak” is who you are. However, that isn’t really important to me. I know in my heart who I am and where I came from. That’s all that matters to me.”
